One of my central pedagogical goals in teaching Geographies of Migration and Mobility each spring is to leave my students with a strong foundational understanding of the immigration system. One way I test that knowledge is through a midterm exam that includes roughly 20 questions as well as some short answer questions. It is not designed to push them to their limits, but rather to test their basic technical competence.
This year, after grading the midterm, it occurred to me that a version of the midterm might be appropriate to share online with others who might like to test their own knowledge. So that’s what I did over the weekend. I removed most (though not all) of the course-specific questions that a general audience would be less likely to know, replaced them with questions that I sometimes rotate into the exam, and modified other questions for clarity. I did leave in about three questions that require more course-specific knowledge, but I believe most people can make an educated guess. Being well-read in current immigration literature helps, of course.
The result is an online quiz through Google Sheets that you can take to test your own knowledge of immigration. As of this morning, 335 people have taken it—which is far more people than I thought would have an interest in this. So that’s fun! The average score as of this morning (3/14/22) is 77%.

I got a 95%. I did some overthinking on the "borderscapes" question. I enjoyed taking it. Thanks!
I got a 90% I would have gotten 95% if I hadn't answered the question about what he should do when he crossed the border looking for asylum... I know he should go to the Border Patrol, but that's more than likely going to get you sent back to Mexico. So, I said he should get on the bus and head straight to Canada. It's gotta be easier there! Thanks for the quiz. (Glad I hadn't forgotten what I learned this past year in VIISTA.)
