Event Announcement: "Communicating in an AI-Powered World"
Join Syracuse University in Washington, D.C. on July 24, 2025, for a free, in-person event exploring the future of communication in an AI-powered world. Registration is required to attend.
I’m excited to invite you to an important and timely event in Washington, DC: the Newhouse Impact Summit 2025, hosted by Syracuse University’s Institute for Democracy, Journalism and Citizenship (IDJC). The IDJC is a bold, innovative new space for public scholarship, policy engagement, and media thought leadership right in the heart of the capital — and I’m thrilled to be a part of it’s growth right now.
This year’s Summit, “Communicating in an AI-Powered World,” brings together leading journalists, researchers, technologists, and public communicators for a full day of discussion on how artificial intelligence is reshaping the way we tell stories, build trust, and engage the public. With a focus on responsible, human-centered communication strategies, the Summit is designed to spark real conversation across academia, media, and industry.
This convening will be especially valuable for:
Journalists, editors, and newsroom leaders
Researchers, teachers, and university faculty
Communications professionals and strategists
Policymakers and advocates working on information and trust
Anyone grappling with how AI is transforming communication in real time
If you care about how we communicate truth in an age of machine-generated content, this is where you want to be.
I’m honored to be part of the speaker lineup, and I’ll be delivering a talk titled: “Will the Real AI Please Stand Up: Why Academic-Industry Partnerships are Key to Bridging the Gap Between Artificial Intelligence and Authentic Insights.”
In this talk, I’ll be drawing on years of immigration research, public-facing writing, and digital advocacy to explore one of the most critical tensions of our time: the role of artificial intelligence in shaping — and sometimes distorting — the kind of deep, contextual knowledge that only human beings can provide.
This session is about making AI make sense — and asking the harder questions: What should we trust? Who benefits? And how do we preserve democratic dialogue in a time when machines can generate answers faster than we can ask the questions?
