I didn't know this awful fact, either. They barely taught us about American Japanese internment camps in high school history class. Thanks for sharing this information.

Read The Japanese Thread by John K Emmerson for more background. In addition to what Austin writes, Emmerson says at the beginning of the deportations to the US wealthy Peruvian-Japanese bribed to avoid going but toward the end of the war when they realized the US may win and expecting to be able to stay in the US afterwards, some started to bribe to be taken to the US for internment.
